Trafalgar Square in London

Trafalgar Square is a popular square situated in central London, England, and a major tourist attraction. Ideally situated in the heart of the bustling city, the square was built in commemoration of Lord Horatio Nelson's victory over Napoleon during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson's Column, a statue guarded by four imposing lion statues and several fountains, takes pride of place at the centre of the square. The square is also home to numerous other statues and monuments, including the fourth plinth, which has been the site for numerous political demonstrations. Trafalgar Square is also the centre of many important buildings and institutions in London.

John Nash, who was a world renowned architect at the time, designed the initial layout of the square in the 1820s. Unfortunately, he did not live to seen his design completed. His vision and ideas was implemented, with development commencing in 1829. By 1840, the square was still being developed.

The National Gallery takes up the north section of the square, while the South Africa House is situated on the east side. The British Museum is situated on the west. The Canada House is wonderful for guests to marvel the original classic interior and ever changing exhibitions. And for those travelling from Canada, take time out to read the Canadian newspapers, browse online, or send and receive emails in Canada House.

Numerous historical statues adorn the plaza of the square. On either side of the Nelson Column are bronze statues of Sir Henry Havelock and Sir Charles James Napier, both former Victorian major generals. On the north are the busts of Beatty, Jellicoe, and Cunningham - all famous past military leaders. Finally, in the north east corner is a statue of George IV on horseback.

Christmas Ceremony:

Since 1947, a Norway spruce (or sometimes a fur) is given to London by Norway's capital of Oslo. This is used as the official London Christmas Tree, and is given as a token of gratitude for Britain's support during World War 2. Traditionally, the Lord Mayor of Westminster joins in the felling of the tree, while the Mayor of Oslo visits London to witness the lighting of the tree at the Christmas ceremony.

Pigeons:

The square used to be famous for its pigeons, and feeding them was a popular activity with Londoners and tourists alike. But these birds has been a bone of contention for a long time, their droppings look ugly on buildings and damage the stonework, while the 35 000 plus flock are seen as a health hazard.

As of 2000, the sale of bird seed was officially terminated, causing a massive uproar and controversy from supporters of the birds. The Save the Trafalgar Square Pigeons foundation, as well as some tourists continued to feed the birds. In 2003, the then Mayor of London Ken Livingstone released a bylaw forbidding the feeding of pigeons completely. In 2007 the bylaw was secured, outright banning the feeding of the birds in the square. Currently, there are a few birds in Trafalgar Square, making it possible for the square to be used for festivals and hired out to film companies. If the birds were still around, this would not have been possible.
