London Bridge - UKThe 860-foot London Bridge in the inner London area joins the City of London and Southwark over the Thames river. The city of Londinium, as the Romans named London, had had some sort of bridge since the Romans built the first one in 43 CE. Fires and wars destroyed many of the first bridges over the Thames; Londoners mostly used wood or stones to build bridges. The Romans had built the bridge as part of their road system and it attracted plenty of trade and settlers. Had it not been for the bridge, London might not have existed as we know it today. The centuries-old children’s nursery rhyme, London’s Bridge is falling down, was prescient: the bridge started falling down in 1962 and that same year the government began building the new bridge. They auctioned off the Old London Bridge remains and sent it to Arizona, where Robert P. McCulloch had it reconstructed. The new London Bridge comprises 3 prestressed-concrete box girders; therefore, it is much stronger than ordinary concrete bridges. Today London Bridge, which belongs to the Pool of London area, is a tourist destination and there are various tours to this area. Some may confuse this area with the Tower Bridge; London Bridge is the Tower Bridge’s plainer neighbour. |
