Chiang Rai, Thailand Known as the 'gateway to the Golden Triangle', Chiang Rai is much less commercial than its fellow Thailand city of Chiang Mai. In fact, Chiang Rai could be seen as the complete opposite as Chiang Mai - laid back, relaxed, less activity and less pollution. Travelling is also easier, as is finding your way through the many features of the city. It is this laid back attitude that gives Chiang Rai its appeal. Although often compared to its more popular north capital, it boasts its own set of attractions and features, putting the city in a class of its own.
Location
Chiang Rai is the capital city of the Chiang Rai province in Northern Thailand. Housing a population of a mere 62,000 people, this area is the main commercial centre of the Golden Triangle border region of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. Chiang Rai is known to be a popular base from which to explore this fascinating region.
The city is centrally located just 200 kilometres northeast of Chiang Mai, 62 kilometres south of Amphoe Mae Sai and the Myanmar border, and 92 kilometres north of Phayao City. The Mae Rok River runs along the north of the city, merging with the Mekong River.

Attractions
- Wat Phra Kaeo - This is a stunning ancient Buddhist temple, and was home to the Emerald Buddha, one of the most famous Buddha images in Thailand.
- Wat Phra Sing - Wat Phra Sing is located near the town hall and was once the home to a major Buddha statue. These days, however, visitors to the area are going to have to settle for a replica of the statue instead.
- Wat Klong Wiang - A worthwhile yet little known temple showcasing exuberant Lanna style.
- Wat Ming Meuang - This small temple is home to the spirit of the city.
- Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong - This temple contains what is believed to be the oldest Holy Relic in Chiang Rai.
- White Temple - A unique and modern temple worthwhile visiting and beautifully decorated.
- Hilltribe Museum and Education Centre - A low-key and little visited museum which houses tools, utensils and traditional hunting, fishing and agricultural equipment. Worthwhile visit.
- Oub Kham Museum - Here you can admire the 120 year old ancient fabrics, the golden throne, king's costume examples, ancient pottery and examples of ancient Lanna literature in the Dhamma script.
- Princess Mother '90 Museum - A fascinating venue dedicated to the life of the beloved Princess Mother, mother of present King of Thailand, King Rama IX.
- Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park - Wonderfully relaxing spot boasting two tranquil rivers, a barge, and several large Shan-style small ponds.
- The Kok River - This river flows through the town and is about 130 kilometres long. Chiang Rai beach is situated on the banks of this river, and is a popular picnic spot during family summer vacations.
- Gate of Siam - Enjoy majestic views over Laos and the mighty Mekong River.
- Namtok Khun Kon Forest Park - Home to the highest and most scenic waterfall in Chiang Rai. En route are some great spots for relaxing, picnics, and nature walks.
Activities
- Trekking - Organise a tour to the hill-tribes.
- Huan Hin hot springs and waterfall - A delightful way to spend the afternoon. Pong Phra Bar is another hot spring spot, and within walking distance to the nearby national park of the same name.
- Golf at the Old Airport - Tee off on a 9 hole golf course with a very good driving range.
