| Visit Ayutthaya - Thailand Ayutthaya is a sacred city which encapsulates both the intense religion and nationalism of the Thai people. What was once the royal capital of Thailand and home to one of the great empires of Southeast Asia, Ayutthaya is a city steeped in history, culture, and legends. The city today is busy and bustling, a far cry to what it once was, but mesmerising nonetheless. The ancient monuments and statues has lost much of it significance over the years, thanks to the modern development of the city, however, cultural experiences still run rampant throughout this thriving city. Location: The ancient city of Ayutthaya, or its full name of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, is set on the Central Plains of Thailand, just 85 kilometres north of the capital city of Bangkok. Ayutthaya covers an estimated 2,556 square kilometres, and is administratively divided into 16 districts. This is a great destination during your travels through Thailand due to its convenient distance and easy access from Bangkok. Ayutthaya was originally known as 'Ayothaya', but was changed to its current name to mean 'the undefeatable city'. Ayutthaya is situated in the central plains, resulting in three climatic seasons - the hot season from March to May, the rainy season from June to October, and the cool season from November to February. Today, Ayutthaya remains one of Thailand’s major tourist attractions, drawing thousands of visitors to its ancient ruins and art works every year. Accommodation: There are plenty of acommodation options in this city to appeal to your taste and budget. Touristy guest houses are in abundance, though luxury accommodation is limited in most of the city. Attractions and Activities: Ayutthaya is home to an abundance of magnificent ancient ruins, temples and statues. Among the many attractions awaiting your viewing is the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, a vast historical site situated in the heart of the city, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.
