Nelspruit, also known as the gateway to the Kruger National Park, is the capital city of Mpumalanga in South Africa. Beautifully set amongst meandering rivers, fertile soil and lush rolling hills, Nelspruit is a nature lover's paradise. With a wonderful sub-tropical climate, Nelspruit is the ideal, low-key base from which to explore the many wonders of the world famous Kruger National Park, and the surrounding province of Mpumalanga.

Nelspruit is a sleepy town known for its fertile soil, making it the trading centre for the production of citrus and tropical fruits like mango, banana, avocado, as well as macadamia and pecan nuts.

Location

Nelspruit is the capital city of the Mpumalanga province, and was founded in 1905 by the three Nel brothers, after whom the city is named. It is centrally located in the north-eastern part of South Africa, just 60 kilometres from the world famous Kruger National Park, 40 minutes from Zimbabwe, and 90 minutes from Mozambique. It is also home to the popular Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport.

Nelspruit experiences an often delightful sub-tropical climate, with mild temperatures averaging between 22 and 25 degrees C. Summers are hot and wet, with winters being warm and dry. During the winter months temperatures can soar during the day, but drops significantly after sunset. Therefore warm clothes are still required for early morning and late night excursions, especially game drives.

  • God's Window - A popular vantage point situated close to the canyon. On a clear day, you may be able to see over the Kruger National Park, towards the Lebombo Mountains of Mozambique.
