Book Flight Tickets - Virgin Atlantic Airways Virgin Atlantic Airways is a British airline owned by business magnate Sir Richard Branson, forming part of his highly successful and recognised Virgin Group. Branson is, however, not the sole owner of the airline, with 51% of its shares. The other 49% is owned by Singapore Airlines. Virgin Atlantic operates flights to most of the top destinations in the world, including North America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Its main bases are at London Heathrow and London Gatwick, with a smaller secondary base located at Manchester Airport. Since its inception, Virgin Atlantic has been the number one competitor of fellow British airline, British Airways. Destinations The majority of Virgin Atlantic's flights operate from London Heathrow, with the remainder operating from London Gatwick and Manchester Airport. There is one seasonal flight which operates from Glasgow International Airport. Fleet Virgin mixes its fleet to include both Airbus and Boeing aircraft, which boast an average age of 6.7 years. All routes from Gatwick and Manchester use the Boeing 747-400 aircraft. The Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 are used on routes from Heathrow. Additionally, Virgin Atlantic has ordered Airbus A340-600 aircraft, as well as Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A380 aircraft. However, the arrival of the Airbus A340 was postponed until 2013 as Virgin Atlantic feels it first has to prove its safety and reliability before putting it in operation. Cabin All Virgin aircraft are divided into three classes - Economy, Premium Economy and Upper Class. Economy - This is the standard, most affordable coach class, ideal for families looking for a comfortable and inexpensive flight. It features fairly standard amenities and services, including free meals and drinks, and a free amenity kit. Seats have a maximum pitch of 81 cm, however, some aircraft have updated seats to include lumbar support. These seats should be installed on all Virgin Atlantic aircraft soon. Premium Economy - A step up from regular economy, those travelling with premium economy can enjoy a separate check-in area from standard economy class. This class also offers wider legroom than economy, as well as additional cabin services like pre-flight drinks and a dedicated cabin crew. As of April 2009, all Airbus A340s and Heathrow Boeing 747 aircraft will feature a wider seat to supply laptop power. This feature will be installed in all Virgin Atlantic aircraft over time. Upper Class - The equivalent to business class, the upper class has claimed to feature the biggest fully flat bed of any other airline. Your upper class seat will also offer in-seat laptop power and power leads for iPods. Upper class passengers also have access to a chauffer, drive through check-in and private security channel, the clubhouse, a more varied menu, as well as an in-flight bar. In-flight Entertainment All passengers travelling with Virgin Atlantic can enjoy personal seat-back televisions providing entertainment during those long-haul flights. Certain aircraft also boast Audio/Video on Demand (AVOD) system called V.Port. Older IFE systems are featured on certain other aircraft in the fleet, and have smaller screens displaying audio and video on a loop rather than on demand. Virgin Atlantic in South Africa Virgin Atlantic Airways offers daily, year-round flights from O.R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to London Heathrow. During the South African summer months (late October to early March), Virgin offers daily flights from Cape Town International Airport. |
