Fly With Qantas Airways Limited Qantas Airways Limited, or Qantas for short, is the national airline of Australia and nicknamed 'The Flying Kangaroo'. Originally spelt QANTAS, and acronym for Queensland and NorthernTerritory Aerial Services, the airline is based in Sydney, with its main hub at Sydney Airport. Qantas is Australia's largest airport, and the second oldest continuously operating airport in the world. In 2008, Qantas was voted the third best airline in the world, with Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific taking first and second honours respectively. History Qantas Airlines was established on 16 November 1920 in Winton, Queensland, and is considered one of the oldest airlines in the world. What started out initially as QANTAS, the airline was originally started by Paul McGuiness, Hudson Fysh, Fergus McMaster, and Arthur Baird. The first aircraft flying for Qantas was an Avro 504K, which was purchased for a mere £1,450. This aircraft cruised at a speed of 105 kilometres per hour (65 mph), and carried just one pilot and two passengers on its maiden flight. Alexander Kennedy, an 84 year old outback pioneer, was historically the first passenger on board Qantas Airlines, receiving ticket number one. Present Qantas Airlines' main international hubs are at Sydney Airport and Melbourne Airport, although it also operates a large number of international flights to and from Brisbane, Perth, Los Angeles International, Singapore Changi, and London Heathrow. The domestic hubs are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth airports, with a strong presence in Adelaide, Cairns and Canberra airports. It serves a range of international and domestic destinations. Awards Qantas has received numerous awards and accolades since its privatisation in 1993, and has since then been one of the most profitable airlines in the world. It was also recently voted the third best airline in the world in the 2008 World Airlines Awards, preceded only by Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific. The airline has also received awards for Best First Class Lounge, Best Airlines Australasia, Best Economy Class Onboard catering and Best Regional Airline Australasia. Destinations Qantas flies to 82 destinations on six continents, with plans to launch flights to Dubai in the future. All direct flights between Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney are advertised as Qantas CityFlyer. Fleet As of February 2009, Qantas operates 237 aircraft, including 40 aircraft by Jetstar Airways and 45 from other QantasLink branded airlines. Oh by the way, there are a few misspellings of the airline, eg. Quantas, Quantus, Quantis, where in actual fact the correct spelling is Qantas! Qantas Airways in South Africa Qantas Airways offers direct, non-stop, scheduled flights from O.R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa to Sydney, Australia. |
