South African Airways does allow travelling with pets. Pets will be carried in the aircraft hold. Only service dogs can be carried in the passenger cabin. Service dogs are carried free of charge.
The weight of your pet and its container will be charged as excess baggage. It is not accepted as part of your free baggage allowance. All dogs, cats, reptiles and primates imported to South Africa need to have microchip implants for identification.
It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that the animals are properly crated and accompanied by all necessary documentation and health certificates.
The container
Domesticated pets will be accepted provided they are placed in a suitable container for transportation.
Each animal must be placed in a container that has enough space for the animal to turn about normally while standing. The ventilation openings must be small enough so that paws/nose cannot protrude outside the container, but big enough that they can get enough oxygen. The container must be lockable.
Fees of Travelling with pets
Charges differ for pets depending on the size of container, weight of your pet and distance being travelled. Additional handling, local government and customs clearance charges may apply.
