Etihad Airways History

After being issued a royal decree by Sheikh Khaliefa bin Zayed Nahyan, Etihad Airways was established as the national airline of the United Arab Emirates. Starting with an initial budget of AED500 million, the airline began its first ceremonial flight to Al Ain on November 5th, 2003, and started commercial operations on November 12th that same year. In the following months, Etihad added almost one route per month to their growing portfolio. Etihad also set up a subsidiary, Etihad Holidays.

In 2004, Etihad flew its first direct flight from the United Arab Emirates to Geneva, and in 2005, it flew to Brussels and Toronto. By 2006, Etihad Airways had flown to 30 destinations in 30 months. In 2008, Etihad carried a whopping 6 million passengers to over 50 destinations.
