Location

Sydney is a compact city surrounded by lush suburbs, metropolitan districts and national parks. Situated on Australia's south-east coast, the city is built around Port Jackson, and is affectionately nicknamed 'the Harbour City'. Sydney is a year round travel destination, enjoying approximately 300 sunny days a year. But, if the outdoors is not your thing, Sydney during the winter months is just as spectacular.

Summer is enjoyed from December through to February, and this is the time when thousands of locals and visitors flock to the world famous Sydney beaches for some sun, sand and surf. During summer, temperatures can reach a sweltering 40 Celsius (104 F), however, the city does experience short but intense thunderstorms during this time, offering a welcome respite from the heat. Autumn (March - May) consists of balmy days and mild to cool nights. This is the best time to explore the beaches and attractions of the city while avoiding the mad summer rush. Winter (June - August) is cool, not particularly cold. Maximum temperatures can reach 17C (62.6 F). Spring (September - November) and is a glorious time to visit. The city is slowly moving into the summer period, but it is still warm and quiet enough to enjoy the attractions without the crowds. This is the time when local sun worshippers start flocking to the beaches for some fun in the sun before the busy summer season.

Sydney offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit all needs, from the budget traveller to the luxury seeker. Budget accommodation is in the form of numerous backpacker hostels, ideal for the younger set looking for a cheap and convenient base from which to explore the city. Mid range accommodation is also popular in Sydney, with a majority of them situated within the CBD or close to the public transport route. For those wanting to splurge on their trip to Sydney, there are numerous luxury, world class hotels scattered throughout the city.
